Sydney Sweeney already restored her dream car back to life and has even taken on some of the country's biggest off-road trails, but nothing could have prepared her for getting to make her own car from scratch. Well, thanks to Ford, the car lover and actor finally got the chance, and it is gorgeous. And because Sydney just couldn't let one of these beautiful cars exist on the road, she's actually giving away a second. That's right, you have the chance to win a 2024 Mustang GT created by the one and only Sydney Sweeney. Fans will get the chance to share their stories of breaking boundaries on Ford's Instagram or TikTok, and Syd will pick the winner herself!
Cosmopolitan caught up with Sydney while she was on the set of a super secret project to talk about her new set of wheels, her collab with Ford, and what your first joy ride should be if you're trying to channel your inner Syd.
When we first hung out in Moab, you mentioned a super secret project. I'm guessing this is it?!
I have been dreaming this up for a very long time with Ford and being able to have such a personal and dream car available for someone else to have is really special.
And it is stunning! Did you feel like a kid in a candy store considering you were building this from scratch vs. restoring something that already existed?
I love that you say a kid in a candy store because I love candy. It's everything that is me. It's a mixture between me as Syd, my vintage 1964 Half Mustang that I have, and just put it into this car. So the exterior is this Robin's Egg Blue, which is also my favorite color, but it matches my original Mustang. And then you have my bolt heart logo, which I'm so excited to see an actual tangible version of. We have my name on the engine, which is insane cause it's also gonna be on someone else's engine. And then you have the custom rims, which are actually really close and similar to the original rims on my Britney Mustang.
My favorite part—and the one that I pushed really hard on—was the starlight ceiling, because I love stars. That just made me remember being back home, looking up at the sky, seeing all the star lights, and just feeling safe. I wanted a car that gives you that personal experience as well.
What was the biggest difference between creating this from the beginning compared to your experience restoring your last ride?
The sky's the limit with the Ford team. And I also got to work with an amazing group of females on the Ford side and my team. A lot of the people I was working with on my original Bronco, who I love so much, were all men. My calls were with the female partners and the chief of the engineering program for Mustang is a woman as well. So that was really cool, being able to have just a badass group of females talking about this car altogether.
There are a lot of personal touches on the car. What is the most "Syd" thing on there?
This is actually a really funny story. I'm gonna have to say a V8 engine. And only because when I finally had enough money to buy my first car, I went to different car shops and test drove different cars. I remember getting in a vehicle and I felt like the car didn't have as much power as I wanted. The car salesman was like, 'Well, it's a V6, you'll be fine with that. I don't think you need a V8. You're a girl, you don't need that power.' And I looked at him and I said, 'No, I think I'm gonna hold out for a V8,' and I got out of the car. So I hope that when they rev an engine and they feel the speed, they feel the power of Syd.
How has this opportunity changed how you tackle your next project?
It definitely has made me want to continue to have a collaborative process with whoever I work with. Whether it's on movies, or shows, or brand partnerships, or just anything. I really like being involved in the conversation. It's really nice to be heard.
There's also an update to the Syd's Garage collection! How was it also getting to continue working on that, and how does it fit with this new car?
I was really excited to expand the collection because there were so many more pieces that I wanted to make. We had this be more in a line with my blues of my Mustang and I was really excited to be able to have some more blue pieces in my closet. They're all just so organically me. Like the baby t-shirt, baseball hat, coveralls. I live in the coveralls. I think it's really cool having pieces that are so versatile that you can work in the shop in like I do or wear street style. They're perfect for everyday use!
Obviously, someone is going to get to win this custom Mustang. What do you hope they do with it when they get to drive it for the first time?
I hope they, in the spirit of me, go to get ice cream and maybe, if they have a dog, take them on an ice cream day and have a joy ride.
